Aiokma Do: The Evolution of a Modern Mixed Traditional Martial Art

Aiokma Do is a modern mixed traditional martial art founded by Dr. Grand Master Rev. Dr. Samuel T. Robertson IV, Ph.D. Dr. Robertson's journey into the world of martial arts began with a deep exploration of various disciplines and a keen understanding of their underlying philosophies. With a background in philosophy and applied martial arts science, he recognized commonalities among different martial arts and sought to integrate them using strategic teaching methods.

Master Sam, as he is affectionately known, embarked on a remarkable journey of martial arts mastery, earning black belts and equivalents in nine different styles, including Tae Kwon Do, Tang Soo Do, Hapkido, Kung Fu, and Tai Chi. Drawing from this extensive knowledge base, he amalgamated these diverse styles into a cohesive system, with Tae Kwon Do serving as the foundational framework and Hapkido contributing its own unique techniques and footwork. Master Sam also incorporated elements of boxing, Muay Thai, Aikido, and Jeet Kune Do, enriching Aiokma Do with a diverse range of techniques and philosophies.

One of the distinguishing features of Aiokma Do is its pragmatic approach to combat. Master Sam emphasized the use of technique over sheer muscle strength, teaching practitioners to leverage their body mechanics effectively. He devised strategies such as limiting defenders to three backward steps after being attacked, after which they must circle out—a principle that encourages proactive defense and strategic positioning.

Furthermore, Dr. Sam integrated his military training from his service in the Marines into the Aiokma Do syllabus, incorporating handgun and rifle defense techniques alongside traditional martial arts training. This holistic approach equips practitioners with the skills necessary to defend against armed assailants in real-life scenarios.

Aiokma Do encompasses a wide array of weapons training, including the samurai sword techniques borrowed from Aikido, as well as the use of nunchucks, bo staff, and principles from Jeet Kune Do. Circular motions and parrying techniques, combined with deadly kicks and elbows, form the backbone of Aiokma Do's offensive and defensive strategies.

The effectiveness of Aiokma Do was put to the test when Dr. Sam found himself confronted by two armed gangs. Drawing upon his real-life street fighting experience, he successfully subdued the assailants using the principles of Aiokma Do, demonstrating the practicality and efficacy of his martial art in life-threatening situations.

Beyond its combat effectiveness, Aiokma Do also emphasizes the importance of spiritual development. Dr. Robertson, a Christian minister, integrated Judeo-Christian beliefs into the martial art, offering practitioners a unique blend of physical and spiritual growth.

Moreover, Aiokma Do stands out for its connection to academia, offering practitioners the opportunity to earn a legal degree in martial arts—a testament to its commitment to intellectual rigor and scholarly pursuit.

In conclusion, Aiokma Do represents the culmination of Dr. Samuel T. Robertson IV's lifelong dedication to martial arts mastery, innovation, and practicality. By integrating diverse martial arts styles, military training, spiritual principles, and academic rigor, Aiokma Do emerges as a holistic martial art that not only equips practitioners with the skills to defend themselves but also fosters personal growth and intellectual enrichment.

At  A.I.O.K.M.A. We believe like the Marine Corps that men or born in three parts. The parts of the spirit, mind, and body. We believe that martial arts are one of the ways to merge the three successfully. We believe the human body can not function at its peak efficacy unless this tri-level bond is established. Once this bond is successfully completed, we are able to tap into our superhuman abilities and function in many efforts seamlessly. We firmly believe unless we teach the old ways, we will still just be athletes with no enlightenment and without the ability to purposely tap into spiritual enlightenment.
